The crown is the concrete slab that sheds rain off the top of the chimney, and in East Tennessee it takes the worst of the weather: soaking afternoon storms followed by overnight freezes that open hairline cracks into channels. We pour new crowns with a proper overhang and drip edge, resurface crowns that are still sound, and fit stainless caps sized to the flue so raccoons, chimney swifts, and blowing leaves stay out of the liner. Mesh spacing is chosen to keep the draft strong on a wood-burning fireplace.
